CHAPTER 3 - MAIN SUBJECTS

SUMMARY

In this Chapter a detailed country by country analysis was made of the most important data on agricultural structures. These are data on land fragmentation, land tenure, legal status of the holder, hired permanent workers, land use, involvement of agricultural holdings in growing important crops and livestock raising, etc. Thus, it is shown that for the reporting countries the average size of holdings is 11 hectares, while the average number of parcels is 3.5 per holding.

Data on land tenure show that the ownership is by far the most important form of tenure, although in some countries renting of land is also an important form. Concerning major crops an analysis was made of the percentage of holdings growing specific crops. Thus, it can be seen that the percentage of holdings growing maize in different countries varies from less then two percent to over 80 percent. Similarly, concerning cattle, the percentage of holdings with cattle varies in various countries from less than two percent to more than 70 percent.
