| This set of global maps, compiled by FAO, is intended
to give a broad view of food and agriculture, with special emphasis
on food consumption aspects. The most important agricultural global
maps are presented in this latest collection. The brief explanatory
notes below provide additional information on each map. In many cases,
the map presentations combine the variable labeled in the heading
along with country shading where undernourishment is estimated to
be above 20 percent of the population. Countries where data for one
or both variables are missing have not been considered. |

Map 1 Undernourished Population
(1999-2001)
This map
presents the estimated percentage of undernourished in the total
population.
The levels of undernourished considered are: extreme and very
low (<5%), moderate low (5-19%), moderate high (20-34%) and
very high (>35%). These data are used in "The State
of Food Insecurity in the World 2003". |

Map 2 Change in Number Undernourished
(1990s)
| This map
combines data for developing countries with those of transition
countries. The map shows the annual relative change in the number
of undernourished for developing countries for the period 1990-92
to 1999-2001, while for transition countries the period is 1993-95
to 1999-2001. Undernourished is defined as the proportion of
the population below the minimum level of dietary energy (calorie)
consumption. |

Map 3 Food Consumption (1999-2001)
| This map
presents the average annual level of food consumption per person,
expressed in terms of calories per day. |

Map 4 Growth in Food Consumption
(1995-2001)
| In this
map, the average annual growth rate of the daily food consumption
measured in calories is superimposed on countries with 20% or
more undernourishment. |

| This map
shows the percentage share of cereals in total food consumption,
expressed in calories, superimposed on countries with 20% or

presents the average annual consumption of fruits and vegetables
per person per day expressed in terms of grams, superimposed
on countries with 20% or more undernourishment. |

and Sweeteners (1999-2001)
| This map
presents the share in total calorie consumption of sugars and
sweeteners expressed in terms of calories, superimposed on countries
with 20% or more undernourishment. Sugar from fruit juices is
not included, while sugar crops are included. |

(1999-2001)
| This map
shows the percentage of meat in total food consumption expressed
in protein, superimposed on countries with 20% or more undernourishment. |

| This map
presents the total growth since the base year of 1989-91, for
agricultural crops and livestock, based on FAO production index
number using international prices, superimposed on countries
with 20% or more undernourishment. |

Map 12 Net Trade in Food (2001)
This map
presents national food trade (exports minus imports) divided
by food consumption
expressed in calorie terms, superimposed on countries with 20%
or more undernourishment. Trade in live animals is not included. |

indicates the total cereal food aid (excluding any local purchases)
expressed in kilograms of grain equivalent per person per year,

Undernourished
Undernourished is defined as the proportion of the population below
the minimum level of dietary energy (calorie) consumption
Consumption
The total quantity of foodstuffs produced in a country added to
the total quantity imported and the beginning stocks gives the supply
available. Exports, feed, seed and non-food use plus waste and losses
and ending stocks gives the non-food utilization. The difference
between supply and non-food utilization is consumption. These consumption
amounts are measured at the household door and do not consider in
household waste, table waste or subsequent non-food use.
