What are Millennium Development Goals?

  1. Eradicate poverty and hunger
  2. Achieve universal primary education
  3. Promote gender equality and empower women
  4. Reduce child mortality
  5. Improve maternal health
  6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
  7. Ensure environment sustainability
  8. Develop a global partnership for development.

What is the purpose?

  • Need for a comprehensive development agenda with quantitative, time- bound targets and indicators
  • Specific targets help to:
    • mobilize international partners
    • benchmark and assess progress
    • initiate policy reforms, institutional change and budget reallocations

Why Have A National Millennium Development Goals Report?

  • A tool for awareness raising, advocacy, alliance building and renewal of political commitments at the country level
  • To build national capacity for monitoring and reporting on goals and targets
  • Generate a “can do” atmosphere so that policy -makers and other actors are encouraged to act

Challenges for UN Country Teams

  • Identify where country stands in relation to the MDGs
  • Support country in defining national goals and targets
  • Contribute to analysis of alternative strategies to achieve national goals
