JOINT WORKSHOP ON STRENGTHENING NATONAL SYSTEMS OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS IN AFRICA

Conakry, Guinea, 23 – 25 June 1999

Background Information

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Bank (WB) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) are jointly organizing a workshop on Strengthening National Systems of Food and Agricultural Statistics, 23-25 June 1999 to which you are kindly invited. The workshop will be held in Conakry, Guinea, at the kind invitation of the Government of Republic of Guinea, and will be followed by the 16^th Session of the African Commission on Agricultural Statistics (AFCAS), 28 June – 1 July 1999 at the same venue.

The workshop will include the following discussion topics:

Data requirements for policy and planning

Data use for policy analysis

Household surveys and other data sources

Developing a coordinated approach

Data processing, management, storage and access

Technical cooperation.

Presentations will also be made on:

Food Insecurity and Vulnerability and Information Mapping (FIVIMS), and

Poverty Monitoring and Impact Evaluation in Africa.

The workshop will be of interest to senior Government Officials in Ministries of Agriculture and National Statistics Offices concerned with the collection, compilation and analysis of food and agricultural statistics as well as the users of such information.
