on National System of Food and Agricultural Statistics
Bucharest, Romania, 19-21 May 2004
BACKGROUND
To support global efforts to improve statistics in
the context of the market economy, the FAO Statistics Division,
in close collaboration with the Institutul National de Statistica
(INS), Romania, organized the "Seminar on National System of
Food and Agricultural Statistics" which will be held
from 19 to 21 May 2004 in the INS premises in Bucharest, Romania.
PURPOSE OF THE WORKSHOP
The seminar was designed to identify
and to discuss the problems faced by countries in modernizing their
agricultural statistics systems and adapting them to the new requirements
that have arisen in the transition from a planned to a market economy
and/or the accession to the European Union, be it decided upon or
still being negotiated. A special focus was put on data quality
assessment and the reconciliation of data from different sources
(agricultural census and current statistics).
PARTICIPANTS
High-level officials
from the Central Statistical Office and/or the Ministry of Agriculture,
depending on where the responsibility for Food and Agricultural
Statistics is located, from the following countries were invited:
Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Moldova, Poland and Turkey, Georgia
and Kyrgyzstan. Representatives of EUROSTAT and Italy, as well as
resource persons from the FAO Statistics Division in Rome also participated.
