High-Level Workshop on CountrySTAT and Metadata

Cairo, Egypt, 11-14 December 2006

BACKGROUND

The Statistics division of FAO and the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) signed a letter of Agreement under P.O. 178142 and Project (GCP/INT/991/AOAD), and agreed that the two organizations jointly organize a High-Level Workshop. Therefore, in accordance of the agreement and as an activity of the project, the Workshop has been planned to take place between 11 and 14 of December 2006 at Cairo Egypt where 16 member countries of the AOAD are invited.

OBJECTIVES

Promote the dissemination of metadata to help users understand the quality of data and the use of the CountrySTAT system for dissemination of agricultural statistics and related metadata.
Demonstrate international concepts, standards, and definitions to participants.
Enhance the capacity of AOAD Secretariat and Individual Arab Countries in the construction of countrySTAT.
Develop a thematic module in Arabic within CountrySTAT for AOAD member countries.
Establish contacts between the Statistic Division of FAO, AOAD and the national statistics offices in order to improve flow of information to these organizations.

PROGRAMME

The first part of this Workshop will demonstrate and share, in two or three sessions, the experience of installation and application of the CountrySTAT system for dissemination of agricultural statistics in AOAD member countries. The second and main part of the Workshop will discuss country reports of metadata on national agricultural statistical systems in the 16 AOAD participating countries, namely:

LANGUAGE

The meeting will be conducted in English and Arabic.
Based on country reports, a compendium of metadata on national agricultural statistics in AOAD member countries will be published by FAO as an outcome of the Workshop in Arabic, and also depending on the availability of resources publish in English.

DOCUMENTS

Participants to the Workshop are requested to prepare Country Reports of metadata on national agricultural statistical systems and to submit them to the organizers well before the actual meeting.

In order to assist in the preparation of these country reports, the following reference materials are provided:

Statistical Metadata Survey Questionnaire: this questionnaire is to be completed in collaboration with all major institutions involved in food and agriculture statistics in the country.
Outline for Preparing Country Report on Metadata of National Agricultural Statistics. The country report should be an analytical report using information from the above questionnaire and other sources. It should be prepared in accordance with the guidelines provided in the Outline.
