Workshop on Strengthening Food and Agricultural
Statistics in the Pacific in Support of Food Security and Poverty
Reduction Strategies and Programmes
Nadi, Fiji, 10-13 November 2003
BACKGROUND
To support global efforts to reduce poverty and improve
food security conditions FAO, with support from the World Bank,
has organized a Workshop for the Pacific sub-region on Strengthening
Food and Agricultural Statistics in Support of Food Security and
Poverty Reduction Strategies and Programmes. The workshop was held
from 10 to 13 November 2003 in Nadi, Fiji,
OBJECTIVE
The workshop focused on ways to measure food security/poverty
in the Pacific and to develop a strategy to recognize the need for
data, to obtain the required data, to analyze it and to present
it to decision makers.
The following substantive topics were discussed at
the workshop:
- Developing Food and Agricultural Statistics in Support of Food
Security and Poverty Reduction in the Pacific
- Poverty Reduction, Food Security and Sustainable Development
in the Pacific: Information requirements, methods and technical
tools
- Promoting the effective utilization of information for decision
making on poverty alleviation and sustainable development
- Promoting the Use of Data on Food and Agriculture
- Capacity Building in support of agencies responsible for statistics
to measure progress toward food security and poverty reduction
PARTICIPANTS
The workshop provided a forum for senior planning
and statistical personnel in the Pacific countries to discuss relevant
issues associated with the collection, processing and dissemination
of food and agricultural statistics in support of national food
security and poverty alleviation concerns.
