Statistics Advisory Committee of Experts, 13th Session

Statistics Advisory Committee of Experts
Thirteenth Session

Rome, Italy, 28-30 April 2004

(Experts attending the 13th Session of SAC)

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE MEETING

The main role of the FAO Statistics Advisory Committee of Experts (SAC) is to:

  • Provide an outside perspective to our work, contributing to the priority setting process that is essential if our work programme is to remain focused on the needs of our users
  • Contribute to the improvement of the quality of FAO statistics
  • Reinforce FAO’s efforts for national agencies and other international organisations to adopt the statistical standards that have been developed by FAO in the area of food and agricultural statistics, in co-operation with Member countries.

In this respect, SAC is a key instrument in reinforcing the co-operation both among countries and international organizations and also between them. In particular, this body plays a leading role in orienting the future direction of the international statistical system in agriculture.

The SAC met for the first time in 1963.

The Committee is composed of 15 members who are Heads of Statistics of five developed countries, five developing countries and five international organizations: European Community, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Philippines, Turkey, United States, International Labour Organization, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, PARIS21/OECD, United Nations, and the World Bank. They serve in their personal capacities, and not as representatives of their governments or organizations.

Views were sought from SAC members at this Session:

  • Orientation of the statistical activities in FAO, including the FAOSTAT2 project
  • Statistical policy at national level: integration of agricultural statistics in the national statistical system; international comparison of data; strengthening national capacity in agricultural statistics; expansion of the scope of agricultural statistics to cover socio-economic, environmental and rural statistics; agricultural census as a main, but not only, component of national surveys programme
