Best Practices and Emerging Methods

Back-to-back with the 18th AFCAS
BACKGROUND
In collaboration with several International Agencies,
a Workshop on "Rural and Agricultural Statistics for Policy
Support: Best Practices and Emerging Methods was organized the 23-25
October 2003 just prior to the 18th AFCAS Session.
This followed the success of the 16th and 17th sessions of AFCAS
where such back-to-back technical workshops were organized.
PURPOSE OF THE WORKSHOP
The workshop focused on addressing and sharing experiences
in:
- Mainstreaming agricultural statistics systems in on-going institutional
reforms of national statistics systems and strategic statistical
plans in African countries ;
- Analysis and use of agricultural and rural data in support of
poverty reduction and food security policies and programmes. A
particular accent will be put on country experiences in the use
of GIS/mapping tools to target rural poor, food insecure or vulnerable.
- Good practices and new tools for data collection, transmission,
processing and statistical information management systems (storage,
access and dissemination):
- The emphasis will be put on alternative methods and tools
for more cost effective agricultural surveys (use of GPS,
scanning of questionnaires);
- Experiences in including other socio-economic data into
agricultural surveys will be discussed (food information,
gender, poverty related data);
- Statistical information management systems, new tools and
good practices in the use of Information and Communication
Technologies for easy access and wide dissemination of data
will be presented.
- Way forward: The International Initiative for Strengthening
Food, Agriculture and rural statistics in Africa.
PARTICIPANTS
The workshop brought together :
- Data users: Heads of PRSP and Food Security Programmes, Research
and planning institutions, others ;
- Data producers: Directors of National Statistics Offices and
Directors of National Agricultural Statistics Services;
- Concerned International, Regional, Sub-regional and bilateral
Agencies as well as regional training centres.
