An overview of some people-centred approaches to rural development that are being used, or have been used, in different areas of the world. The approaches covered here are the sustainable livelihoods approach, as is being developed by the UK’s Department for International Development (DfID); the land management approach (gestion de terroirs); the farming systems approach; and some approaches that have been emerging from Latin America, and in particular territorial planning approach (ordenamiento territorial)

Le principal objet de ce travail est l’étude des approches centrées sur les gens ou sur les moyens d’existence utilisées au sein de la FAO et des approches de développement utilisées dans les différentes régions culturelles et linguistiques.

It focuses on the sustainable livelihood (SL) approach, which builds on principles of building assets and a livelihoods focus, also incorporates principles of reduced vulnerability and sustainability as critical to achieving lasting poverty reduction. Using a livelihoods perspective along with a good developmental tool kit and appropriate sequencing can enhance the quality of a wide range of approaches to improve the lives of the rural poor.

Este ensayo explora la validez y el potencial del enfoque de medios de vida para el diseño e implementación de proyectos de desarrollo rural, centrándose en el sistema productivo de maízfríjol. El marco conceptual ha sido completado con la perspectiva de territorialidad, entre otros instrumentos. It synthesizes the main issues and lessons learned from the Inter-agency Forum on Operationalizing Sustainable Livelihoods Approaches, held at the Certosa di Pontignano, near Siena, Italy, 7-11 March 2000. The Forum brought together several agencies that had been applying or developing sustainable livelihoods (SL) approaches in their work, including CARE, the Department for International Development (DFID), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Food Programme (WFP).
