The European Commission for the Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (EuFMD)

Component 1.4 South-Eastern Europe

The objective of this component is to improve emergency management capacity for FMD in the Balkan region of both EuFMD Member and non-Member Nations. The aim is to ensure a coordination framework is in place for the region to ensure the continuous development and improvement of contingency plans and to ensure laboratory capacity in the event of an animal health crisis.

Recently, the EuFMD has focused emergency preparedness efforts on testing of preparedness, using simulation exercises and by developing a self-assessment tool. Gaps in preparedness and good practices are identified by auditors in DG SANTE Directorate F Health and Food Audits and Analysis during the course of audits on contingency planning and disease outbreaks.

This component also aims to establish a system of regional diagnostic support in the event of an FMD crisis and to assess the integration of FMD national reference laboratories into national contingency plans.
