The European Commission for the Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (EuFMD)

Tripartite Groups

In pursuing its objectives of controlling FMD and preventing its re-introduction to Europe, EuFMD engages in special activities such as serosurveillance, vaccination campaigns, buffer zones and training workshops. When implementing field activities, EuFMD usually does so in close cooperation with the European Commission (EC) and the Office International des Epizooties (OIE).

These Tripartite EuFMD/EC/OIE Groups are often regionally-based and work with major risk areas for the re-introduction of FMD into Europe. Currently, there are two Active Tripartite Groups, one for the Balkan Region and one for the Transcaucasian countries of the Community of Independent States (CIS).

The Balkan Tripartite Group meets at least once a year with the CVOs of Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey. The second OIE/EuFMD/EC Tripartite Group was created in 1998 to support and co-ordinate the control of FMD in CIS and particularly in Caucasia (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia) under the scientific support of the All-Russian Institute for Animal Health.
