Food security and investing in agriculture

Food security remains a key concern of FAO, and through its Committee on World Food Security (CFS), the Organization plays a leading role within the UN System in monitoring world food security and in mobilizing national and international action to respond to long- and short-term food security threats.  As regards efforts to address long-term food insecurity, FAO has a lead role in the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger by 2015 under Goal 1 of the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) and under the Plan of Action of the 1996 World Food Summit (WFS). A large share of the Organization’s resources is devoted to making progress in this area and FAO monitors regularly the situation in its annual publication The State of Food Insecurity in the World (SOFI).

Investing in agriculture and rural development is of critical importance in reaching the MDGs and the WFS target.  This issue was the main subject of the 2009 World Summit on Food Security (WSFS) which unanimously adopted a declaration pledging renewed commitment to eradicate hunger from the face of the earth sustainably and at the earliest date. LOG is supporting the relevant units at headquarters in monitoring and working on these issues.
