Third round of National Networking Workshops, FAO TCP/RER/3403
One of the overriding political and economic challenges in the South-Eastern European (SEE) region is the integration process with the European Union (EU). The responsibility for implementation of rural development policy lies with the Ministries of Agriculture, of which the administrative capacity is limited and inexperienced in EU harmonization process.
In parallel to that, a wide range of studies, including policy recommendations, have been elaborated for the region by academic institutions, universities and development organizations. However, in most cases these documents and knowledge have not been taken into consideration in the course of policy formulation due to the lack of dialogue between policy makers and academics.
The project aims at addressing a closer coordination, and, in the long run, a stable relationship between policy makers and academics, and between the SEE countries, which is essential for an effective administrative system and an accelerated EU accession process.
Therefore under the project “Streamlining of agriculture and rural development policies of SEE countries for EU accession” several Regional and National Networking Workshops are organized by FAO jointly with SWG (Regional Rural Development Standing Working Group in South-East Europe). The upcoming 3rd round of National Networking Workshop will take place as follows:
The Workshops are organized for the representatives of the Ministries of Agriculture, representatives of the NGOs and experts for analysis of agricultural policies. The aim of the workshops is to bridge the information gap between policy makers of SEE Ministries of Agriculture and researchers, as well as between EC and SEE countries. Therefore at the workshops experiences are shared between them by establishing an active cooperation at national and regional level, as well as providing decision support, recommendations for policy making. As a result, country specific recommendations and Action Plans will be elaborated, which eventually will lead to improved policy formulation, streamlined agricultural and rural development policies of SEE countries for EU accession and better planning of budgetary support to the sector.
