The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is now officially present in Moldova, with the inauguration today of FAO’s new offices in Chisinau.

The opening ceremony took place with the participation of Mr. Ion Sula, Moldova’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, Tony Alonzi, FAO Deputy Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia and FAO Representative in Moldova, and several high-level government officials. The event followed the signing in 2014 of the “Host Country Agreement” outlining the arrangements for the new FAO Representation.

“FAO will be extending its activities in Moldova,” said Alonzi, “through important technical assistance projects and initiatives aimed at developing the country’s food and agriculture sector.” He noted that FAO currently is present in the country with seven active projects, and another two in the pipeline.

While in Chisinau, Alonzi met with representatives of the European Union Delegation, World Bank country office, United Nations Resident Coordinator, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration.

The new FAO Representation will be hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, on its premises at 162 Stefan cel Mare in the capital city.
