Joined Press Conference held to announce the 28th FAO Regional Conference for Europe

25 January 2012, Budapest - Preceding the Informal Consultation (26-27 January 2012) a joint press conference was held at the Embassy of  the Republic of Azerbaijan in Budapest, on Wednesday, 25 January 2012, by His Excellency Vilayat M. Guliyev, Ambassador and Ms Fernanda Guerrieri, FAO Assistant Director General and Regional Representative for Europe.
The event was joined by Mr Zoltan Kalman, Head of International Relations Department, Ministry of Rural Development, Hungary.

The Twenty-Eighth FAO Regional Conference for Europe (ERC) and the Thirty-Seventh session of the FAO European Commission on Agriculture (ECA) will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan from 16-20 April 2012. This conference week in Baku also includes an NGOs/CSOs Consultation meeting.
This ERC is being hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan.
Representatives from 53 member countries and one member organization have been invited to the meeting. Observers from international non-governmental organizations, intergovernmental organizations and United Nations organizations have also been invited.
The main item on the agenda of the ERC (19 April 2012) is a ministerial round table on the policies for food security in the region, and particularly the coming challenges and perspectives based on a background paper which makes projections and estimates up to 2050.

I his speech H.E. V. Guliyev stressed that “Azerbaijan pays great importance to cooperation with FAO and the intention to hold the FAO’s next regional conference in 2012 in Azerbaijan shows the political will of the government of Azerbaijan to raise that cooperation to qualitatively new level.”
Ms Guerrieri emphasized that during recent years FAO has undergone a thorough reform with further decentralization, the idea being to bring  the Organization’s expertise closer to the countries that need technical support. In this context, FAO has given greater significance to its Regional Conferences.
Mr Kalman informed that considering the importance of the 2012 ERC Minister for Agriculture of Hungary will participate in the event. Mr Kalman also informed the press about the 26-27 January Informal Consultation hosed by the MoRD. The event aimed at prepararing the ERC.
