Subregional training seminar on plant genetic resource management

26 – 31 August 2013, Dushanbe, Tajikistan

Subregional training seminar on plant genetic resource management The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with the National Republican Centre for Genetic Resources under the Tajik Academy of Agricultural Sciences held a subregional training seminar on plant genetic resource management (PGR). It was the second seminar held in Tajikistan in order to build the capacity of specialists in PGR conservation and utilization as well as database creation. Prof. I.G. Loskutov from the N.I. Vavilov All-Russian Research Institute of Plant Industry (VIR) was invited to the seminar as consultant. This year’s training seminar focused on organizing and undertaking PGR collection and study expeditions.
The training was attended by 20 specialists from the national genetic resources centers of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The activity consisted of theoretical instructions and practical field studies on PGR collection and documentation. The PGR collecting field expeditions were set off at the foothills of the Hissar Valley in Faizobod District and in Romit Ravine, where the participants had an opportunity to see the rich variety of Tajikistan’s flora and visit farmers’ fields to study their cultivars. Moreover, they visited the pilot sites and the genebank of the National Republican Centre for Genetic Resources. The seminar discussed strengthening collaboration and identified the PGR areas for human capacity development in the region’s countries. The participants requested that such training courses focusing on database creation, molecular and genetic analyses, experimenting methods, statistical data processing are organized at a later stage in other countries of the region, and that the provision of support for recent graduates in their postgraduate studies in VIR is considered.
