5-7 May 2014, Ankara Turkey
FAO Sub-regional Office for Central Asia (FAOSEC) and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) will organize a sub-regional workshop on Animal Welfare in Livestock and Meat Production for the Central Asian countries, Turkey and Azerbaijan in Ankara between 5-7 May 2014.
Bringing together Turkey and other countries from the region to review and discuss critical links between the livestock production and animal health and welfare, the workshop will also introduce some of the current trends in animal welfare.
Some of the topics to be focused on can be listed as:
- International dimension of animal welfare
- Farm animal welfare and meat production
- EU legislation on farm animal welfare
- The role of veterinary professionals, veterinary education and international collaboration
- Experience regarding animal welfare standards in the region
The participants will have the opportunity to acknowledge the current legislation and role of various agencies in animal welfare and to discuss with international experts other topics on animal welfare, halal meat and international regulations. A visit to a slaughterhouse near Ankara will take place where participants will have chance to observe the advancement and opportunities for improvement in Turkish slaughterhouses.
Key speakers from FAO, OIE, EU, RSPCA, and MFAL will participate and deliver their presentations to share their experiences.
