(09-11 January, 2014-Istanbul, Turkey) The Regional Workshop on Harmonization of Seed Legislation and Seed Policy Formulation was held in Istanbul, Turkey on 09-11 January 2014 under GCP/INT/123/MUL, Seed Sector Development in Countries of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).
The project was launched in June 2013 with an inception workshop where senior representatives of the project countries gathered in Ankara. The first technical workshop (Bishkek, October 2013) was held together with selected national consultants whose responsibilities were discussed during the event. The second workshop which was organised in Istanbul aimed to develop an outline of the work plan for the national consultants for 2014.
The main purpose of the workshop was to bring together all those who will be involved in implementing the project in order to guide them and to define their respective roles.
In the first session of the workshop, the overall structure of the project was explained by Hafiz Muminjanov, Plant Production and Protection Officer at FAO Sub Regional Office for Central Asia (SEC).
The project intends to support both national governments and ECO countries in the regional harmonization process which is ultimately expected to lead to an increased trade in the ECO region. It is also aimed to improve the conditions and availability of various types of seeds for all farmers in the region.
