Training of young professionals – key activity for strengthening the national programs

Training of young plant breeders and pathologists in cooperation with CGIAR centers CIMMYT and ICARDA and developing training programs & curriculums are the key activities on strengthening capacity of the national plant breeding programs and plant protection organizations as well as intensification and diversification of cropping system.

For the last two years  FAO SEC has been providing support to young professionals from the subregion to attend the international training programs. From 06 July to 25 August 2013 Mr. Mustafa Imren, a young wheat nematologist from the Plant Protection Research Institute, Adana, Turkey, attended a training on soil-borne diseases in Beijing, China. His participation in the training was supported jointly by CIMMYT and FAO SEC. The training program was also useful for Mr. Imren to enhance his knowledge on identification of cereal cyst nematode populations using molecular methods and complete his PhD thesis.
