17th National Fisheries Symposium

Fisheries Symposium, IstanbulThe 17th National Fisheries Symposium was successfully organized by Istanbul University Faculty of Fisheries and was held in Istanbul University Congress and Culture Hall in Istanbul between 3-6 September 2013. FAO-SEC was represented by Mr. Ozgur Altan, the aquaculture Expert of FISDEV Central Asia, upon the kind request of the organization committee. According to the official congress records, more than 600 participants who have been working as researchers, academicians and fisheries and aquaculture experts from different universities, faculty of fisheries and research institutes participated the symposium.
The Fisheries and Aquaculture Team of FAO-SEC supported the activity, having sent newly printed publications (Sturgeon Hatchery Manual, CACFISH reports, Country Reports etc) to the organization committee and they were distributed to the related experts directly. The organization committee arranged a special boot for FAO and some students to support it. Mr. Altan represented FAO during his participation, responded all questions on fisheries and aquaculture policies and the main role of FAO and its projects.
This participation and the support increased the awareness to FAO’s fisheries and aquaculture activities among the Turkish experts. FAO was represented totally 10 sessions in the symposium and supported more than 20 aquaculture related presentations. The attendance of Mr. Altan to the symposium provided that the national experts met with FAO directly and got familiar to the FAO activities, especially FISHDEV Central Asia Programme.
