Improving Sudan’s food security together
Partnership between the EU, FAO and the Government of Sudan
The Sudan Productive Capacity Recovery Programme-Capacity Building (SPCRP-CB/Sudan) is a six-year partnership between FAO, the EU and the Government of Sudan, launched in 2007 with an EU-contribution of €19 million.
Aiming to build a strong and sustainable agricultural sector, the programme reflects the EU’s commitment to peace-building through recovery activities in support of food security and rural development.
Its core goal is to strengthen capacities in rural communities and government line ministries in the states of South Kordofan, Blue Nile, River Nile, Red Sea and the Abyei Administrative Area.
To-date, almost 3 000 government staff have been trained in planning, management and administration of development programmes and policy formulation. In addition, , policy groups and database systems have been set up to monitor and evaluate agricultural production, while state ministry buildings were either built or rehabilitated.
Helping farmers help themselves
Rural communities are receiving training in agriculture, animal husbandry, horticulture, forestry, fisheries, water harvesting and rural enterprise through Farmer Field Schools (FFS), the training of Community Animal Resources Development Associates (CARDA) and the establishment of Rural Market and Small Business.
Nearly 180 Farmer Field Schools have been set up, 4 Farmer Field Schools supervisors and some 275 facilitators have been trained in productive agricultural practices and provided with the required agricultural inputs. This will enable some 5 000 farmers to be trained by the end of the programme.
200 Community Animal Resources Development Associates have been trained and equipped with improved livestock health kits - allowing the associates in turn to provide veterinary services to 10 000 pastoralists and agro-pastoralists. A trainer for trainers programme is in the making.
Over 40 small business groups and marketing associations have been established to increase productivity and market access. A training manual is in preparation, while three agro-business centres are being established, as well as a rural marketing unit in the four state where the programme is active.
In addition, a number of Training of Trainer sessions have been organized in a wide range of skills, including communication, the value chain approach, strategy planning, as well as seedling and vegetable production and nursery management.
