FAO’s technical cooperation assistance in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia achieves notable results but has not influenced directly the country’s food security policies

A recent evaluation by the FAO Office of Evaluation says that FAO’s technical cooperation assistance in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has achieved notable results in some technical domains. However, a lack of strategic engagement with the government on national food security policies and priorities has not allowed the country to benefit from the full array of FAO’s services.

FAO breaks new grounds in rural poverty reduction

FAO is breaking new grounds in rural poverty reduction through an enhanced support to employment creation and social protection, and partnerships with counterparts outside its traditional domain, says the report of a recent evaluation by the Office of Evaluation. However, greater consideration of poverty analyses and pro-poor approaches in the design of country programmes and projects would pave the way for a more targeted response.

FAO country programme demonstrates relevance in addressing development issues in the Kyrgyz Republic

FAO’s programme in the Kyrgyz Republic has been comprehensive and has largely
addressed relevant development goals and key development issues, says a recent
report by the Office of Evaluation. Most of the initiatives have enjoyed a high degree of ownership by beneficiaries and are appreciated by government counterparts and donors, but a more comprehensive analysis of the rural context and a greater focus on value chains would bring greater results, the report adds.

FAO is well positioned to contribute to resilience agenda

The renewed interest in resilience represents a historic opportunity for FAO, which is well positioned to contribute to the resilience agenda; nevertheless, the Organization has yet to make its presence fully felt and recognised in the “resilience space” especially at country level, says a recent evaluation report. FAO needs to strengthen and diversify its offer of high-quality resilience-enhancing services and create a stronger resilience learning environment, the report adds.

Food Security Information System project fosters strong collaboration
among stakeholders in the Kyrgyz Republic

A recent evaluation by the FAO Office of Evaluation has found that the Food Security Information System (FSIS) project has helped reinforce synergies and broadened professional collaborations among different groups of stakeholders in the Kyrgyz Republic. But the project will require a detailed exit strategy to ensure sustainability of its impact.

Forest and Farm Facility programme fills gaps in rural development cooperation

The Forest and Farm Facility (FFF) programme is filling gaps in rural development
cooperation; strengthening the capacity of forest and farm producers and
enabling them to engage in policy advocacy. There is however a scope to enhance
sustainability of the value chains being developed by further upgrading the status
and capacity of producer organizations, says the report of a recent evaluation by
the FAO Office of Evaluation.

FAO’s support for agricultural and food value chain development has aimed at strengthening agricultural diversification in Barbados and member countries of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), but this work on value chains needs to be more market-oriented in order to succeed, says an evaluation report.

The Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics programme of FAO is helping countries to develop statistics systems for agriculture, but it may suffer a setback due to funding gaps, says a recent evaluation by the Office of Evaluation.

Hunger reduction programme promotes synergy between FAO priorities and the EU development agenda

The Improved Global Governance for Hunger Reduction Programme has
helped create synergies between FAO priorities and the EU development
agenda in many ways, but its coherence is less evident at the country level, says
the report of a recent evaluation by the Office of Evaluation.

An FAO-led partnership project has helped increase scientific and economic knowledge and understanding about groundwater governance at the global and regional levels but is not sufficiently oriented to national decision-making, says the report of a recent evaluation conducted by the FAO Office of Evaluation.

A recent evaluation has shown that FAO helped the Government and the people of Burkina Faso strengthen the resilience of vulnerable households, nutrition-sensitive agriculture, climate change adaptation, water management, seed and non-wood forestry production, and food security policy development. At the same time, FAO needs to support the Government in mobilising resources for implementing these policies and strengthening capacities of national partners particularly at the decentralized level.
