Evaluation of FAO’s contribution to building resilience to El Niño-induced drought in Southern Africa 2016-2017

21 January 2020
During the 2015–2016 agricultural season, Southern Africa experienced intense drought due to one of the strongest El Niño events in 50 years. With 70 percent of the population reliant on agriculture, El Niño had a direct impact on food security and caused loss of income across crop and livestock value chains. FAO activated a corporate surge support and launched its Southern Africa El Niño Response Plan, appealing for USD 109 million to support government efforts to rebuild and fortify agricultural [...]

Final evaluation of the project “Securing tenure rights for forest landscape-dependent communities: linking science with policy to advance tenure security, sustainable forest management and people’s livelihoods”

16 December 2019
Peru is among the world’s ten mega-diverse countries, Indonesia’s rainforests shelter almost 20 percent of the world’s plant, mammal and bird species, while Uganda forests are home to about 7.5 percent of mammal and 10.2 percent of global bird species, and support the world’s highest number of primate species. Unclear tenure and conflicts are the major factors in deforestation of forest areas targeted by the project implemented by FAO, aimed at securing tenure rights for forest landscape-dependent communities: linking science [...]

Mid-term evaluation of “Securing Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use in China's Dongting Lake Protected Areas”

16 December 2019
The Dongting Wetlands is China’s second-largest freshwater lake and one of the 200 key global ecozones. Its high biodiversity serves as an important ecosystem for over 120 bird species and many endangered species. It plays an important socioeconomic role in the area as nearly 16 million people live around the lake. Despite the importance of the wetlands, the services it provides are increasingly at risk. Loss of habitat arising from sector conflicts and economic interests of local farmers and fishers [...]

Mid-term evaluation of ''Disposal of Persistent Organic Pollutants and Obsolete Pesticides and Strengthening Life-cycle Management of Pesticides in Benin”

15 December 2019
Inadequate agricultural policies and poorly enforced regulations lead to the accumulation of unused pesticides. In Benin, stockpiles of obsolete pesticides have become a great concern, posing a threat not only to human health and environment, but also to the sustainable development of the region. Farmers also often look for cheaper pesticides and use different chemicals than those officially recommended. FAO implemented the project ‘Disposal of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and obsolete pesticides and strengthening life-cycle management of pesticides in Benin’ [...]

Final evaluation of the project “Protection of the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME)”

15 December 2019
The project "Protection of the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME) " was a regional initiative to set-forth governance reforms, investments and management programmes to help CCLME countries address priority transboundary concerns regarding the reduction of fisheries and related biodiversity and water quality. Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA) and a Strategic Action Programme (SAP) were achieved despite difficult working contexts. By formally adopting the SAP, participating countries confirmed their interest in and commitment to the ecosystem-based approach to marine and coastal [...]

Mid-term evaluation of “Disposal of obsolete pesticides including persistent organic pollutants, promotion of alternatives and strengthening pesticides management in the Caribbean”

09 December 2019
Declines in the sugarcane and banana industries of the Caribbean have resulted in an accumulation of disused pesticides. The adverse effect of agrochemicals, particularly pesticides, on human health and the environment is a global concern. The project ''Disposal of obsolete pesticides including persistent organic pollutants (POPs), promotion of alternatives and strengthening pesticides management in the Caribbean'' was implemented by FAO to promote the sound management of pesticides throughout their life-cycle in the Caribbean region, and reduce the risks they pose. [...]

Evaluation of FAO's Strategic Results Framework

30 October 2019
At its 127th meeting of the Programme Committee, next November, the FAO Office of Evaluation (OED) will officially present the Evaluation of FAO’s Strategic Results Framework. Designed in 2013, the Strategic Framework aimed to position the Organization more strategically and to address the facts that the Organization’s programmatic activities were defined along silo-like disciplinary lines and that corporate efforts were not clearly aligned with the country programme priorities agreed with Members. The rationale behind the Strategic Framework was sound and the [...]

Evaluation of the FAO Strategy for Partnerships with the Private Sector

22 October 2019
At the time of its adoption in 2013, FAO’s Strategy for Partnerships with the Private Sector contributed to more private sector collaboration and resulted in several formal agreements being signed. Following the adoption of the 2030 Agenda, and the SDGs, several UN organizations shifted gear and established deeper and more proactive partnerships with the private sector. In this context, FAO has not positioned itself to fully capitalize on such potential and maintains a more conservative approach. Meanwhile, those partnership formalized [...]

Evaluation of the work of the Subregional Office for Mesoamerica 2012-2017
