New EVAL-ForwARD Community of Practice launched

19/10/2018

EVAL-ForwARD is a new Community of Practice (CoP) for evaluation in Agriculture, Food Security and Rural Development, created in response to a call for strengthening evaluation capacities, enunciated both in a UN General Assembly resolution and in the Evaluation of FAO’s evaluation function. The CoP is a joint initiative of the FAO Office of Evaluation along with its counterparts at WFP, IFAD and the CGIAR research partnership.

Why EVAL-ForwARD?

The objectives of EVAL-ForwARD are to enhance awareness and improve evaluation capacities at country-level in the above mentioned sectors and to contribute to the assessment of progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 2 - End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. The Community of Practice welcomes evaluators, development practitioners, policy makers, parliamentarians, government officers and researchers interested to expand their knowledge of good evaluation practices in agriculture, food security and rural development.

When was it launched?

EVAL-ForwARD was launched in September 2018, at the presence of the three Directors of evaluation of the Rome-based agencies (FAO, IFAD and WFP) in an event called The role of Evaluation in the public sector: how best to support national capacities. During the event, participants had the opportunity to exchange ideas with the Directors on the aims, opportunities and thematic focus of this initiative, and to network with each other. The launch event was organized in conjunction with the EvalColombo2018 forum to promote the use of evaluation, on September 16th in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

EVAL-ForwARD activities aim to:

  • Facilitate the exchange of evaluation information, practice and knowledge among its members, leading to greater awareness and offering opportunities to learn from each other’s experiences,
  • Promote networking among peers, opening up collaborations and synergies,
  • Offer updated resources and information about events, conferences, and training opportunities.

How to get involved?

Go to the EVAL-ForwARD website  and register to the community. EVAL-ForwARD operates through a moderated mailing list (Dgroup) which as of today counts almost 200 participants and allows immediate exchanges among members. Participants can write messages in English, French or Spanish, as messages are translated in the three languages. On the website, you will find a document repository of evaluation resources, information on future events and a blog section, to which members are welcome to post reflections on lessons learned, challenges and various aspects of evaluations.

Upcoming events

An upcoming webinar series will offer the opportunity for EVAL-ForwARD members to engage with the most pressing aspects of evaluation in agriculture, food security and rural development and to address the broader challenges of measuring progress towards the SDGs. EVAL-ForwARD will also organise face-to-face meetings among members of its growing community.

Improving policies and decision-making

EVAL-ForwARD advocates the raising of awareness and use of evaluation at all levels to improve policies and decision-making.
