Support for the sustainable and ecological management of FAW by smallholder farmers is critical to protect their livelihoods and the environment. With support from projects around the world, recommended management practices are tested and adapted in the field via Farmer Field Schools (FFS), involving farmers associations and farm organizations in collaboration with research and advisory services. Experiences and successes are being monitored and documented to refine management options.

Farmer education and community action are critical elements in the strategy to sustainably manage FAW. The farmer field school approach is a holistic, informal education approach promoted by FAO and many organizations worldwide, providing platforms for farmers to learn, experiment and co-create knowledge. Field schools operate in over 90 countries and have covered a wide range of topics after 30 years of existence.

As part of the FAW management strategy to reach rural communities affected by the pest, FFS work is combined with mass information campaigns, rural radio, participatory videos, community action plans for FAW management and short field courses for farmers and rural advisors, based on experiential learning. In Africa, over 400 master trainers and 12 600 FFS facilitators have been trained on FAW sustainable management, reaching almost 350 000 farmers in more than 20 countries.
