Global Forum and Expo on Family Farming to be held in Budapest from 4-6 March 2014
In the context of the International Year of Family Farming, this official event, organized by the Hungarian Ministry of Rural Development, in cooperation with FAO, aims to underline the central role that family farming plays in achieving global and local food security, as well as ensuring sustainable use of natural resources.
The Forum will address three key themes:
• The role of family farms in contributing to local and global food security;
• Family farming and the three dimensions of sustainability – harmonizing the social, environmental and economic aspects;
• Key challenges and opportunities for agricultural investments in family farming.
The Global Forum and Expo on Family Farming aims to cover these issues in an integrated manner, combining policy, scientific, financial/economic and governmental approaches. The main policy discussions of the Forum will be conducted through a Plenary Session, Ministerial Roundtable and Panel Discussions. Parallel to the Forum, the Expo will be a great opportunity for family farmers of participant countries to introduce their activities and make the potential and values of family farming evident for policy-makers and society at large.
Ministers of Agriculture and/or government representatives, Heads and representatives of global and regional inter-governmental organizations and Heads and representatives of non-state global and regional organizations of family farmers (e.g. cooperatives and producer organizations, private sector, civil society, research institutions, universities) are invited to the event.
The Forum will contribute to the International Year of Family Farming global dialogue and debates on policies and programmes that affect family farming at the national, regional and global levels. The event aims to build momentum and address the building blocks and policy options in achieving family farming as a global priority in the agricultural, environmental and social policies at all levels.
