Regional dialogues on family farming: Working towards a strategic approach to promote food security and nutrition

FAO in collaboration with the World Rural Forum, the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) and the World Farmers Organization (WFO) is jointly planning to hold a series of regional dialogues to enhance local, regional and global discussions on family farming and smallholder farming (including forestry, fisheries, pastoral and aquaculture production).

The regional dialogues aim at enabling a discussion between different actors (family farmers, small farmers and their organizations, government representatives and policy makers, researchers, etc.) to increase the understanding of the family farming context in each region, including the identification of challenges, opportunities for agricultural investment and policy priorities to achieve food and nutrition security, eradicate hunger and rural poverty.

Expected results are:

  • Agree on common recommendations for family farming in each region.
  • Identify good practices of family farming models including supportive policies, initiatives and organizational models of producer organizations and cooperatives to be documented and disseminated.
  • Facilitate at the regional level the launching of a platform enabling a multi-stakeholder dialogue.

The outcomes of these regional dialogues will provide a regional overview of family farming issues that will be addressed in the IYFF Global Dialogue to be held in Rome in 2014, the FAO Regional Conferences and other relevant regional and global processes and fora.

Five Regional Dialogues with experts and policy-makers on family farming, including workshops for the elaboration of position papers are scheduled to take place in October-November 2013:
