Organic and fair trade fresh fruits and agroindustrial production of pineapple in Benin and Costa Rica

This project aims at improving the well-being of small producers of Benin and Costa Rica through the development of a sustainable production method for the supply of organic and fair trade fresh fruits (primarily pineapple but other tropical fruits as well) and juices. The project is in some ways a response to the market demand for organic fruits and juices as well as a transparent and fair trading partnership between North and South. The main specific objectives of the project were to promote the exchange of strategies, methodologies and technologies between Benin and Costa Rica, encourage the coming together of organic and fair trade pineapple production, the diffusion of organic production methods to new producers, the increase of the overall production in Benin by introducing new varieties and to develop the infrastructure necessary for the processing of pineapple into juice and potentially other derivatives. As a result of this project, 250 small-scale producers in Costa Rica and 195 in Benin benefited from the expertise of other organic producers as well as from the application of new production techniques that have significantly increased their production.
