Climate-smart agriculture in Madagascar

Madagascar is currently the 5th worldwide among countries most exposed to risks due to climate change and the first country in Africa exposed. For 30 years since 1980, natural hazards including droughts, earthquakes, epidemics, floods, cyclones and extreme temperatures, caused economic damage of more than $ 1 billion in Madagascar and the agricultural sector is among the hardest hit sectors. And according to projections, these risks are expected to worsen in the future. In response, FAO with funding from the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) in collaboration with the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has implemented the program entitled "Programme on adaptation and mitigation to climate change in the eastern and southern Africa." The objective of this program is to support the scaling of the adoption of climate-Smart Agriculture techniques to enhance livelihoods and food security of small farmers in the regions of 'Eastern and Southern Africa including Madagascar. FAO with funding from the COMESA-EAC-SADC was implementing a project entitled "Climate Change Adaptation Programme and Mitigation in the Eastern and Southern Africa Region", whose objective is to increase the number of farmers adopting the techniques of Climate Smart Agriculture and Conservation Agriculture (CSA / CA) in the eastern and southern parts of Africa including Madagascar. In this context, the capitalization of the factors of success and blocking the dissemination of CSA / CA techniques in a documentary film is needed. The performance and success of these techniques can be observed with reference and demonstration sites in a controlled environment. The bottlenecks within dissemination of CSA / CA will be visualized with the adoption in peasant plots. The development of this documentary will serve as dissemination and advocacy tools for promoting and scaling of the adoption of CSA / CA techniques intended for technical and financial partners as well as policy makers.
