Small Family Farming in Nigeria - a country specific outlook

Nigeria’s small family farmers own only 0.5 hectares of land on average, but have a relatively wide diversification strategy. Apart from managing mixed crop-livestock systems, also fish farming accounts for a major source of income. Moreover, also the cropping system is characterized by diversification of production, mainly relying on five major crops. Next to their agricultural production, around 43 percent of a small family farms income in Nigeria stems from non-agricultural wages.
This Country Factsheet developed by the ESA Small Family Farms Team takes a closer look on how Nigeria's farmers live their live, how they diversify their income and what potential challenges they face.
