The start of any new year is traditionally a time for setting goals and planning for the year ahead. With all that reflection – why not make “catching up on my reading” one of your goals for 2020?

Add these five FAO publications to your reading list and brush up on these hot topics:

1. Biodiversity: The State of the World's Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture - In Brief

This In Brief version of one of FAO’s most important publications provides a comprehensive overview of a critical subject: biodiversity. The plants and animals that provide food, feed, fuel and fibre—and the organisms that support food production—are critical for safeguarding global food security, underpinning healthy and nutritious diets, improving rural livelihoods and enhancing the resilience of people and communities. This report examines the state of biodiversity today. Give it a read for a solid grounding on the subject. Tip: Check out the interactive Digital Report version of this publication too!

2. Climate Action: Youth in motion for climate action! A compilation of youth initiatives in agriculture to address the impacts of climate change

Young people are increasingly making their voices heard on the subject of climate change. This new FAO publication highlights global initiatives where young people have made a difference. There may be some activities you can get involved in too!

3. Food safety: A Guide to World Food Safety Day

This publication was created for the first ever World Food Safety Day, which took place in 2019. This guide, released during the event, provides facts and figures on food safety and issues a call to action on the part of all industries to ensure that food remains safe along the various stages of the food chain. Promoting awareness of food safety is one of the most basic ways that we can improve human health, increase food security and end world hunger.

4. Youth Engagement: Energy Challenge Badge

Here’s one for the kids. The Challenge Badges series, developed in collaboration with other United Nations agencies, consists of short books that aim to raise awareness among youth on issues from agriculture to climate change and to encourage them to become active agents of change in their local communities. This particular publication, the Energy Challenge Badge, focuses on sustainable energy and explores how we can all work together to improve access to energy around the world. Not only is it a great read but using energy more efficiently makes a great New Year’s resolution.

 5.  Digital Innovation: Digital technologies in agriculture and rural areas

As we move into the next decade, “digital” is the word on everyone’s lips. Digital technologies applied to agriculture can deliver economic benefits by increasing productivity, creating cost efficiencies and opening market opportunities. They can also offer social and cultural benefits by improving communication and inclusivity. Digital technology is going to be a driving force in agriculture from now on, so get ahead of the game and boost your knowledge on the subject with this report!
