L'Afrique est engagée dans une voie de développement qui se caractérise par une croissance économique moyenne de 5 pour cent par an et un essor de la classe moyenne.

Le potentiel agricole du continent africain est largement inexploité et 60 pour cent environ des terres arables non cultivées à l'échelle mondiale se trouvent en Afrique subsaharienne. Seuls quelques pays disposent d'une agriculture et d'un secteur de la transformation et de la distribution des produits alimentaires suffisamment solides pour pouvoir approvisionner à la fois leur marché intérieur et le marché international.

L'accès au marché s'accompagne immédiatement de la nécessité d'élaborer des normes alimentaires fondées sur des principes scientifiques, y compris les normes relatives à la sécurité sanitaire des aliments, qui rendent possible le commerce alimentaire aux niveaux national, régional et international, et qui permettent ainsi à l'Afrique de jouer son rôle dans le commerce alimentaire mondial.

La Commission du Codex Alimentarius offre aux États membres du Comité des solutions visant à exploiter leur potentiel dans le cadre d'une consommation alimentaire croissante, à tirer parti de leur croissance économique et à répondre à leurs besoins s'agissant de l'accès à de nouveaux marchés alimentaires.

Mali launches Codex Trust Fund project

Large scale FAO Total Diet Study successfully assesses chemical residue contamination in food in Benin, Cameroon, Mali and Nigeria

FAO Food Safety and Quality Officers reported at CCAFRICA23 on a Total Diet Study (TDS) that for the first time covered a wide geographical area and examined a high number of chemical contaminants including mycotoxins, dioxins, pesticides, and heavy metals. A TDS is an instrument to assess the dietary exposure of populations to specific chemical contaminants. Understanding flows of antimicrobial resistance through the food supply chain
