Working together to build national Codex capacity in Bishkek

On November 28, 2017, a workshop took place in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic to raise awareness about the importance of the work of Codex for members of Parliament and high level government employees.

This workshop was organized and conducted by the Center for Standardization and Metrology under the Ministry of Economy of the Kyrgyz Republic in cooperation with the WHO country office The meeting was also supported by the FAO/WHO Codex Trust Fund as part of the Kyrgyz project on improvement of Codex work inside the country.

The aim of the seminar was to raise awareness of high-level decision-makers about the Codex Alimentarius activities to strengthen the capacity of the Kyrgyz Republic in creating an effective Codex infrastructure and programs which would help in improving the effectiveness of national food safety programs and food control.

An International Expert from WHO, Dr Jeronimas Maskeliunas from Lithuania, made a presentation on the importance of the work of the Codex Alimentarius Commission for world food trade and drew comparisons between food legislation in the European Union and in the Euro Asian Economic Community.

Presentations about Codex work in Kyrgyzstan were also made by Mr Zhumabek Asylbekov (MoA), Mr Asylbek Sydykanow (MoH) and Mrs Dinara Aitmurzaeva (National Codex Contact Point). Based on the results of the workshop, recommendations for improving the work of the Kyrgyz Republic within the framework of the Codex Alimentarius Commission and broadening the intersectoral interaction between the MoH, MoA and National Center for Standardization and Metrology were made to members of Parliament and high level government officials.
