Celebrating World Food Safety Day in Jamaica

30/05/2021

In Jamaica, this World Food Safety Day will be a food safety week of discussions, activities, media events and fact-checking exercises aimed at consumers, industry and decision-makers across the nation.

The events started on Sunday 30 May and will continue until World Food Safety Day itself, Monday 7 June. The array of events has been organized and supported by the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Jamaica’s Bureau of Standards, consumer organisations, the University of the West Indies and other interested parties, as well as the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). This impressive range of stakeholders will be taking an active approach to understanding food safety needs in Jamaica, by visiting a food outlet, a food manufacturer and an agricultural training college to learn first-hand about practices in different sectors.

There will also be a radio interview with the Chair of the World Food Safety planning committee of Jamaica to “Get the Facts” and a live-streamed webinar entitled “Regulations which ensure food entering & leaving the borders are safe for consumption,” which will involve ministers and agency representatives.

The full week of events will be framed around the World Food Safety Day slogan, “Food safety is everyone’s business” and the calls to action: ensure it’s safe, grow it safe, keep it safe and team up for food safety.
