Government of Serbia, FAO and the EBRD to hold World Food Safety Day webinar for small-scale producers

07/06/2021

The Government of Serbia, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Investment Centre and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development  (EBRD) are planning a World Food Safety Day event to raise awareness about the collective responsibility that is involved in keeping food safe. The virtual discussion is particularly aimed at small-scale producers and processors, government representatives, extension workers and local media and will use the occasion of World Food Safety Day to highlight relevant work that is being supported in Serbia by FAO and the EBRD.

With the support of FAO and EBRD, the Government of Serbia has made recent progress in food safety and quality standards to improve competitiveness in the country’s meat and dairy industries, followed by fruit and vegetable processing. In the carefully designed National Flexibility Measures, authorities have developed food-safe bylaws and derogations to ensure compliance with EU food safety standards, while safeguarding the nation’s traditional food practices.

It is these developments that will be the focus of the World Food Safety Day celebrations. The Measures will be introduced to the audience by relevant ministerial representatives, there will also be a presentation of a set of guidelines that have been devised to help people understand the bylaws and how to comply with them. The focus of the seminar will particularly be on the final set of guidelines prepared for the fruit and vegetable processing, and this will also be addressed in the 1.5-hour webinar.
