Support World Food Safety Day

A World Food Safety Day would provide an opportunity to create awareness and ensure Codex standards lead to action everywhere.

Establishing a World Food Safety Day would give consumers, producers and governments a chance to focus on an issue that is often taken for granted. Food safety is invisible until you get ill. Anyone who has had food poisoning knows this. But there is also another more insidious side to unsafe food. Some chemical contaminants can accumulate in your body, and remaining invisible can creep up on you over time.

The labels on the food in our shops and markets do not read ‘safe to eat’ though it is implied by the products’ availability on a retail shelf. We trust our governments and producers to keep our food safe.

There is a global organization working behind the scenes to support them with standards, codes of practice and guidelines to do just that – Codex.

The road to World Food Safety Day

A proposal to establish a World Food Safety Day is before the Second Committee of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly. The resolution will be discussed in October/November 2018 in the Second Committee and if approved will move forward to the General Assembly in December for final adoption.

Costa Rica announced their intention to bring a resolution to the General Assembly during a meeting on sustainable development at the United Nations in New York, 12 July 2018.

The 40th Session of the FAO Conference in July 2017 adopted a resolution in support of a World Food Safety Day and the World Health Organization expressed their support in December 2017.

The Codex Alimentarius Commission at its 39th session, held in 2016, unanimously agreed to promote a proposal to proclaim a World Food Safety Day on a permanent basis within the framework of the United Nations.
