Online Help
This short guide
indicates the steps necessary to carry out a basic and rapid search in the
database:
·
Select a source language (tick the language you are
searching from) .
·
Tick one or several target languages (the language(s) you
are searching into) in the Target list.
·
Enter your query (this can be a word, expression,
abbreviation, etc.) in the Search window.
·
Press the Search button. The hit list will display a list of
matching terms on the left of the screen.
·
From the hit list, click on single entries, which will then
be shown on the right.
·
Once you have read the information of one entry, you can
click directly on a new entry in order to view it.
Additional tips:
·
When entering your query, you can tick the box 'Exact match'
in order to look for the word or expression exactly as you have entered it.
This option is useful in order to limit the amount of results from a search. It
should, however, be reminded that this option may sometimes limit too much the
results obtained.
·
When entering your query, you may also tick the box 'Fuzzy
Search' if you are not sure of the exact words so that the system will find
similar entries.
·
You may also tick the box 'Match any word' when you would
like the results to show ANY of the words placed in the search window.
·
And finally, you may also tick the box 'Also search in
definition' so that the word or expression you are looking for is also searched
for in the definition fields.
In addition to the
options and features described above, it is also possible to:
·
by selecting in the Categories list the
category in which you are looking for the term. The system include two types of
categories:
o
Titles: includes all names of FAO Bodies, departments,
divisions, services, branches, programmes, etc., and other institutions.
o
Terminology: includes all technical terms related to the FAO
fields of activity.
·
by selecting in the Subject list the
domain(s) in which you are searching. Please note that you can select one or
several subject fields (by using the Ctrl key). It should also be reminded that
filtering on domains may sometimes restrict the search too much and may
therefore yield few or no results at all.
·
You may save the current settings of source and language
settings chosen as your default setting.
·
When viewing an entry, you are able to send your feedback to
system managers with any information that you would like to suggest in
relation to this specific entry. Near the Save Preference button, and at the
top right hand corner of each entry, an at sign icon
is available. We kindly invite you to use the icon as much as possible to
provide us with any comment, term or equivalent suggestion, etc., that would help to enhance the content of the database.
