  Development and Planning Service


Responsibilities
The Development and Planning Service (FIEP) has the primary responsibility for providing advice, assistance and information to FAO Members on policies, strategies, plans and programmes for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture development.

Functions
The service promotes, in particular, the knowledge and practice of sustainable captures fisheries management and national policies/strategies aiming to initiate and expand aquaculture activities. The scope of such support includes preparation of technical papers on capacity control in fisheries; review of management practices; support to development of an understanding of the possibilities to control capacity; review of effects of national aquaculture policies; review of the implications of aquaculture for food security and poverty alleviation.

The service prepares and disseminates regular reviews of the states and prospects of the world’s fisheries and aquaculture, undertakes and disseminates studies on the major sectoral issues in this field; produces and maintains a series of fishery country profiles; coordinates and contributes to the preparation of the biennial review of the State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture.
