Field programme activities
The Field Programme of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department is an essential component of FI’s work, since technical assistance to member countries shall be provided. In this context, the FI Field Programme is constituted by the totality of projects, programmes and activities that are executed or implemented at country, regional, interregional and headquarters level.

The funding sources for the field programme activities are extrabudgetary provided by governments from developed or developing countries, other UN agencies, international financing institutions, multilateral institutions, non-institutional contributions (the private sector, local authorities, and voluntary contributions from the general public), and the Regular Programme (TCP).

The projects are implemented on behalf of donors (extrabudgetary funds) or using resources of FAO’s Regular Programme (Technical Cooperation Programme/TCP). The purpose of the projects is to provide technical assistance to achieve predefined specific objectives in fisheries and aquaculture related matters.
The main contributors (donors) of the extrabudgetary funding (not part of the FAO budget) are Governments from developed countries as UK, Italy, Japan, Norway, Spain, Sweden, EC, Germany and others. Developing countries as Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Cambodia, Republic of Korea, Namibia and Mexico also contribute.

The FI projects are aimed at providing technical assistance at global, interregional, regional, subregional and country levels. Two are the main sources of funding of projects: i)the Regular Programme (the FAO’s core budget proceeding from assessed contributions from member countries) in which TCPs and Special Programme for Food Security (SPFS) are included, and ii) the extrabudgeatry resources provided by donors for projects which are channelled through different Trust Fund modalities: Government Cooperative Programme (GCP), Unilateral Trust Funds (UTF), Strategic Partnership Programme, Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA), the FAO Trust Fund for Food Security and Food Safety.
