Statistical divisions of 'Major Fishing Area 47 - Southeast Atlantic' have been revised in agreement between FAO and the South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO), which endorsed this modification at its 4th Annual Meeting (Windhoek, Namibia, 8-11 November 2007). Starting with the FAO fishery statistics inquiry for 2007 data, countries fishing in area 47 are requested to return catch statistics according to revised statistical divisions which distinguish between catches taken within and outside the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of the coastal states. See below list of revised divisions.



Division 47.A.2 covers the rectangle bounded by a line joining the following points 0°-20°W; 0°-10°W; 6°S-10°W; 6°S-20°W. This area is included in the SEAFO Convention Area but in the FAO global grid of Major Fishing Areas it belongs to Area 34 and not to Area 47. Catch statistics reported for this division will be included by FAO under those for Major Fishing Area 34.

Tuna catches are not allocated according to statistical divisions and are grouped together into a division named "Tunas" (47.0.0).

Three other divisions, namely "Western coastal, not known" (47.1.9), "Agulhas coastal, not known" (47.2.9) and "Not known" (47.9.0), contain catches for which is not exactly known the statistical division.



Overview  
The Southeast Atlantic comprises all the marine waters, bounded by a line beginning at a point on the west coast of the African continent at 6°04'36'' S latitude and 12°19'48'' E longitude; thence running in a northwesterly direction along a rhumb line to a point at the intersection of the meridian 12°00'E with the parallel 6°00'S; thence due west along this parallell to the meridian 20°00'W; thence due south along this meridian to the parallel 50°00'S, thence due east along this parallel to the meridian 30°00'E; thence due north along this meridian to the coast of the African continent; thence in a westerly and northerly direction along the coast of Africa to the original point of departure.


47.1.1 Cape Palmeirinhas Division
Waters lying between 6°00'S and 10°00'S latitude included in the Angolan EEZ. From this division are excluded the waters of the estuary of the Congo River, i.e. the waters lying to the northeast of the line drawn from Punta do Pradao (6°04'36''S and 12°19'48''E) to a point at 6°00'S latitude and 12°00'E longitude.

47.1.2 Cape Salinas Division
Waters lying between 10°00'S and 15°00'S latitude included in the Angolan EEZ.

47.1.3 Cunene Division
Waters lying between 15°00'S and 20°00'S latitude included in the Angolan and Namibian EEZs.

47.1.4 Cape Cross Division
Waters lying between 20°00'S and 25°00'S latitude included in the Namibian EEZ.

47.1.5 Orange River Division
Waters lying between 25°00'S and 30°00'S latitude included in the Namibian and South African EEZs.

47.1.6 Cape of Good Hope Division
Waters lying between 30°00'S and 40°00'S latitude and between 10°00'E and 20°00'E longitude included in the South African EEZ.

47.2.1 Middle Agulhas Division
Waters lying between 20°00'E and 25°00'E longitude included in the South African EEZ.

47.2.2 Eastern Agulhas Division
Waters lying between 25°00'E and 30°00'E longitude included in the South African EEZ.

47.A.0 SEAFO Division
The waters bounded by a line beginning at the border of the Namibian EEZ crossing the 20°00'S latitude; thence due west to 20°00'W longitude; thence due north to 6°00'S latitude; thence due east to 5°00'W longitude; thence due south to 15°00'S latitude; thence due east to 5°00'E longitude; thence due north to 6°00'S latitude; thence due east up to the Angolan EEZ; thence due south along the offshore border of the Angolan and Namibian EEZs to the point of departure.

47.A.1 SEAFO Division
Waters lying between 6°00'S and 15°00'S latitude and between 5°00'W and 5°00'E longitude.

47.B.0 SEAFO Division
Waters lying between 20°00'S and 28°00'S latitude and between 20°00'W and 0°00'E longitude.

47.B.1 SEAFO Division
The waters bounded by a line beginning at the border of the Namibian EEZ crossing the 28°00'S latitude; thence due west to 0°00' longitude; thence due north to 20°00'S latitude; thence due east up to the Namibian EEZ; thence due south along the offshore border of the Namibian EEZ to the point of departure.

47.C.0 SEAFO Division
The waters bounded by a line beginning at the border of the South African EEZ crossing the 30°00'E longitude; thence due south to 40°00'S latitude; thence due west to 20°00'W longitude; thence due north to 28°00'S latitude; thence due east to 0°00' longitude; thence due south to 35°00'S latitude; thence due east up to the South African EEZ; thence following eastward along the offshore border of the South African EEZ to the point of departure.

47.C.1 SEAFO Division
The waters bounded by a line beginning at the border of the South African EEZ crossing the 35°00'S latitude; thence due west to 0°00' longitude; thence due north to 28°00'S latitude; thence due east up to the Namibian EEZ; thence due south along the offshore border of the Namibian and South African EEZs to the point of departure.

47.D.0 SEAFO Division
The waters bounded by a line beginning at 50°00'S 30°00'E; thence due west to 14°00'E longitude; thence due north to 45°00'S latitude; thence due west to 4°00'E longitude; thence due south 50°00'S latitude; thence due east to 20°00'W longitude; thence due north to 40°00'S latitude; thence due east to 30°00'E longitude; thence to south to the point of departure.

47.D.1 SEAFO Division
Waters lying between 45°00'S and 50°00'S latitude and between 4°00'E and 14°00'E longitude.
