Collection Overview 
This database contains national annual statistics on the number, total tonnage and total power of fishing vessels utilised in commercial, industrial and artisanal fisheries.

Fishery vessels
this term comprises mobile floating objects of any kind and size, operating in freshwater, brackish water and marine areas and used for catching, harvesting, searching, transporting, landing, preserving and/or processing of fish, shellfish and other aquatic animals, residues and plants.

Besides FAO, such statistics are used by the governments and the industry; in particular they are useful to the fishing vessel construction industry and equipment suppliers
Status 
Changes were made in the collection of fleet statistics as from 1996. Data collected from 1970 to 1995 covered total tonnage of "fishery vessels" (fishing and non-fishing vessels), used in commercial, industrial and artisanal fisheries. These statistics were collected by size of vessel measured in gross register tons (GRT) or gross tons (GT) and by type of vessel according to length overall, for some 12 categories of vessel defined in the International Standard Statistical Classification of Fishery Vessels (ISSCFV).
