    Part I Statistics and main indicators

    Part I of the Fishery and Aquaculture Country Profile is compiled using the most up-to-date information available from the FAO Country briefs and Statistics programmes at the time of publication. The Country Brief and the FAO Fisheries Statistics provided in Part I may, however, have been prepared at different times, which would explain any inconsistencies.

    Fishing is traditionally restricted to the wetlands in the northern part of the country, and although the demand is increasing, the country has one of the lowest levels of per capita fish consumption in Africa, estimated at 3.7 kg in 2016. The largest source of water is the Okavango delta, which has the most important fishery accounting for about 80 percent of the national fish catch of 38 tonnes (in 2016). In 2004, 3 250 fishers were reported. Most of the fish eaten in the country is imported and imports of fish and fishery products were valued at USD 10.3 million in 2017, while exports are limited (USD 450 000 in the same year). There is some potential for fisheries to be developed in hundreds of small reservoirs that are used for watering livestock in Southeastern and Central Botswana.

    In addition to fishing for consumption, small-scale recreational fishing could also provide communities with an additional source of income. However, due to the seasonal nature of the streams feeding the reservoirs, most of these reservoirs have limited diversity of fish species, which in most cases is restricted to the catfish. More popular species among consumers are the various indigenous Tilapia species, but because the construction of most reservoirs is relatively recent and because of the seasonal nature of the streams feeding them, tilapias are usually only present where they have been stocked. Aquaculture production is focused on tilapia farming and the annual production was 15 tonnes in 2016.
