    Part I Statistics and main indicators

    Part I of the Fishery and Aquaculture Country Profile is compiled using the most up-to-date information available from the FAO Country briefs and Statistics programmes at the time of publication. The Country Brief and the FAO Fisheries Statistics provided in Part I may, however, have been prepared at different times, which would explain any inconsistencies.

    Fisheries is a very important sector for the development of Viet Nam taking into account its contribution to the achievement of food security, the alleviation of poverty, sustainable livelihood creation, economic growth and in the generation of rural employment.

    In 2016 Viet Nam was the fourth major producer of fishery and aquaculture in the world with a total production of 6.4 million tonnes. Since 2007, aquaculture has been the major contributor to total fisheries production and reached 3.6 million tonnes in 2016.

    Marine capture fishery produced 2.7 million tonnes in 2016. Most stocks are considered already fully or over-exploited and no further increase of capture production is likely. Improvements of post-harvest practices and use of trash-fish by-catch for food could contribute to further gain of captured fish for food security. In 2015 a total of 28 719 vessels were reported.

    The construction of new dams and reservoirs have had significant negative impacts on inland fisheries, e.g. many fisheries in the Red River delta disappeared as a consequence of the Hoa Binh Dam. The substantive area of productive floodplains in the Mekong delta was also diminished due to its conversion to agriculture area. Estimate of total catch from inland fisheries in 2016 was around 108 000 tonnes, with a decrease of 56 percent compared to the peak reached in 2001.

    Approximately four million people are employed in the fisheries primary sector in Viet Nam. Aquaculture employs an estimated 2.6 million people, with one million jobs in shrimp aquaculture alone, while another 1.8 million people are marine fishers. Around 8.5 million people (10 percent of the total population) derive their main income directly or indirectly from fisheries. Most fishers and aquaculturists are small-scale producers. Around 30 percent of the dietary animal protein consumed by people in Viet Nam derives from different aquatic products. Per capita consumption of fish increased from 12.8 kg in 1990 to 20.4 kg in 2000 and 36.3 kg in 2017, though it varies considerably from 60 kg per capita in Long An province to 30 kg per capita across the Mekong Delta down to 12 kg per capita in the Northern interior.

    Viet Nam is the third major exporter of fish and fishery products in the world, with exports valued at USD 8.5 billion in 2017. An important proportion of these exports consisted of Pangasius, shrimps and tuna. During the last few years, Viet Nam has also increased its imports of fish and fishery products, with a significant share of them consisting of raw material for processing and re-exports. In 2017, imports were valued at USD 1.7 billion. Viet Nam became a Party to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in 1994 but has not signed the UN Fish Stocks Agreement. Viet Nam is a member of the Mekong River Commission (MRC), the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC), the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA), the inter-governmental body “Marketing Information and Technical Advisory Services to the fishery industry in the Asia-Pacific” (INFOFISH).
