Report | Mon, 4 Feb 2008 | Global Big Numbers Project Workshop in Brazil FAO and Special Secretariat for Aquaculture and Fisheries (SEAP, Brazil) hold a workshop for the development and implementation of the Global Big Numbers Project in Brazil, at the Center for the Development and Capacity Building of Human Resources (CENTRE) of the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) from 29-30 November 2007.
The Global Big Numbers Project is a joint activity of FAO and WorldFish Center (WFC) funded by the World Bank PROFISH Programme. The first of two planned workshops in Brazil takes place at the Center for the Development and Capacity Building of Human Resources (CENTRE) of the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) from 29-30 November 2007. Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, 19–29 September 2006 The fifth Regional Workshop on the Assessment and Management of the Caribbean Spiny Lobster, organized by the FAO Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission in cooperation with various regional institutions, follows on from those held in 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2002. The goal of each workshop was to build on the information base of the previous workshop. The fifth Workshop is divided into two parts. The scientific part reviews and updates the status of the Caribbean spiny lobster at national, subregional and regional levels. | Tue, 9 May 2006 | Second International Seminar on Responsible Fisheries The Second International Seminar on Responsible Fisheries will gather national and international experts and researchers to debate the present and future of fisheries in Brazil. Along with Terramar, other institutions are supporting the Seminar: the Fórum de Pescadores e Pescadoras do Litoral do Ceará (FPPLC) with the Comitê de Organização da Secretaria de Aqüicultura e Pesca (SEAP), Ceará; Grupo de Defesa da Pesca Sustentável no Brasil (GDPS); Instituto de Ciências do Mar (LABOMAR) and the Departamento de Engenharia de pesca da Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC).
The Seminar will focus on responsible fisheries and on the reduction of capture of marine species with high commercial value, in particular lobster stocks. The Seminar will also address the problem of illegal fishing and its disrupting impact on these delicate species.
| Wed, 25 Jan 2006 | FAO FishCode STF/OSPESCA Regional Workshop on the Improvement of Fishery Data and Information Collection System Knowledge of the status and trends of capture fisheries, including socio-economic aspects, is crucial to sound policy-development and responsible fisheries management. It is necessary at the national level for informed decision-making linked to food security planning and securing other key socio-economic benefits provided by the fisheries sector. The overall objective of the Workshop is to facilitate the effective generation and use of fisheries statistics and information as a foundation of policy-development and responsible fisheries management within the Central American and Caribbean region. The workshop addresses the data and information collection systems for capture fisheries in marine waters, including industrial, commercial, subsistence/small-scale Fisheries. Special point of attention will be coral reef fisheries.

Meeting documents | Tue, 20 Sep 2005 | Regional Workshop on Sustainable Fisheries and Livelihoods in Latin America A four day worshop,organised by ICSF and hosted by CeDePesca, the event is being supported by the FAO FishCode Programme (http://www.fao.org/fi/fishcode.htm). Participant countries include Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Chile and Argentina. The objectives of the workshop are:
1. To promote understanding about the value and importance of sustainable fisheries, and about fisheries management measures that recognise and protect the access rights of artisanal and small-scale fishworkers;
2. To review the contribution of small-scale fisheries to sustainable development (poverty alleviation, food security, resource conservation etc) in Latin American countries;
3. To review the various formal and informal management provisions that have been adopted by countries in the Southern Cone region of Latin America to protect access rights of artisanal fishworkers to fisheries resources, and to examine the effectiveness of these provisions for protecting livelihoods and for improving management of fisheries resources;
4. within a sustainable fisheries framework, highlight the need to develop, strengthen and improve measures to protect the access rights of artisanal and small-scale fishworkers;
5. To review the FAO Code of Conduct, and highlight the particular contribution its implementation could make to protecting and promoting small-scale fisheries.
