Gillnets and entangling nets are strings of single, double or triple netting walls, vertical, near by the surface, in midwater on on the bottom, in which fish will gill, entangle or enmesh.

Gillnets can be operated from boats and canoes on inland waters and inshore, decked small vessels in coastal waters and from medium sized vessels fishing offshore.

Characteristics

Species EnvironmentFound predominantly at or near the surface. Coastal pelagic fish found between 0-100 m. Adults occur in a wide range of habitats from murky inner harbors to open seas. Diurnal and solitary, but can also be found in small aggregations. Feeds on fishes, cephalopods and sometimes on crustaceans.
