A drifting longline consists of a mainline kept near the surface or at a certain depth by means of regularly spaced floats with relatively long snoods with baited hooks evenly spaced on it.

Characteristics
Species EnvironmentPelagic species in oceanic waters but sometimes found in coastal waters (depth range 0-800 m). Generally above the thermocline. Migrate toward temperate or cold waters in the summer and back to warm waters in the fall. Adults are opportunistic feeders, known to forage for their food from the surface to the bottom over a wide depth range. Feed mainly on fishes but also on crustaceans and squids.
