Abstract / DescriptionTravelled to Durban, South Africa, from 9-17 August 2003 to participate in the 21st International Cartographic Conference and 12th General Assembly of the International Cartographic Association at the International Convention Centre in Durban, South Africa. A paper was presented on the African Water Resource Database (AWRD) project by FAO/FIRI. The Conference was organized by South Africa’s National Committee for the International Cartographic Association (ICA) in cooperation with the Geographic Information Society of South Africa. This Conference (ICC) was the first International Cartographic Conference held in Africa and has been described as the largest GIS conference ever in this continent. There were three primary objectives for this 21st Conference – these were (a) to assess the current status of cartography, (b) to exchange ideas and information, and (c) to suggest further improvements, techniques and applications of cartography. The theme of the 21st Conference was “Cartographic Renaissance” to promote the sustainable development and re-awakening of international interest in Africa and its future, however, papers were not restricted to this topic and papers on many other disciplines were presented. The conference covered forty thematic sessions ranging from applied cartography, through education, to spatial data infrastructure.
