Training Course and Workshop Reports

The aim of the training courses was to instill an appreciation of benefits and constraints of GIS and remote sensing. Both aquaculture and inland fisheries were covered. Courses were held in Rome (Travaglia and Appelkamp, 1985), Asia (FAO, 1989), Anglophone Africa (FAO, 1991), Francophone Africa (FAO, 1992), and in Latin America. A manual for self-training on GIS and remote sensing applications was produced (Meaden and Kapetsky, 1991) and it is still being widely disseminated to date as much of the main text remains relevant (see http://www.fao.org/DOCREP/003/T0446E/T0446E00.HTM).

Abstract / DescriptionNational Training Course on GIS and Remote Sensing. FAO Technical Cooperation Project (TCP/IND/2902(A)) on “Health Management of shrimp aquaculture in Andhra Pradesh". TCP/IND/2902(A) has been formulated to improve the capacity of the State Government of Andhra Pradesh (GOAP) to better manage shrimp aquaculture sector, with special reference to controlling diseases and managing health. The main objective of this TCP was to provide technical assistance to the GOAP for creating an enabling environment, conducive to further development and improvement of sustainable aquaculture in India. The present mission was focused on one of the immediate objectives of this TCP designed to improve the sustainability of the sector through Integrated Coastal Area Management (ICAM), use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology, and appropriate institutional arrangements. The project is based on the east coast state of Andhra Pradesh (AP), the state where most of the production is concentrated. The Department of Fisheries (DOF), government of AP organized a three day workshop at Hyderabad on GIS and Remote Sensing in Aquaculture” from 19th – 21st September 2004. The course was aimed at fishery biologists who had no previous experience in GIS. The objective of the course was to provide training to officers from the DOF in integrated coastal management using GIS and Remote Sensing (RS) technologies.
