Training Course and Workshop Reports

The aim of the training courses was to instill an appreciation of benefits and constraints of GIS and remote sensing. Both aquaculture and inland fisheries were covered. Courses were held in Rome (Travaglia and Appelkamp, 1985), Asia (FAO, 1989), Anglophone Africa (FAO, 1991), Francophone Africa (FAO, 1992), and in Latin America. A manual for self-training on GIS and remote sensing applications was produced (Meaden and Kapetsky, 1991) and it is still being widely disseminated to date as much of the main text remains relevant (see http://www.fao.org/DOCREP/003/T0446E/T0446E00.HTM).

Abstract / DescriptionTraining courses in Namibia and Uganda were conducted using a Technical manual on GIS in fisheries management and planning (i.e. G. de Graaf, F.J.B. Marttin, J. Aguilar-Manjarrez & J. Jenness 2003. Geographic Information Systems in fisheries management and planning. Technical manual. FAO Fisheries Technical Paper No. 449. Rome. 162p). The workshop that took place in Namibia from 17-28 June was organized and coordinated by FAO and the BENEFIT programme, with financial support from NORAD. It was attended by eight experts; 6 from Namibia and 2 from Norway. All participants work at NatMIRC in Swakopmund except for one working at the Freshwater Fisheries Institute in Mariental, Namibia. The workshop in Uganda took place from 15-26 July in Jinja, Uganda, it was organized and coordinated by FAO and the Lake Victoria Fisheries Project (LVFRP) with financial support from the LVFRP. It was attended by 20 experts from national fisheries institutes; 13 from Uganda, 4 from Kenya and 3 from Tanzania.
